The Lumo Tape is the summation an interesting period for Heliopause since relocating to Brighton.
With songwriter of the band moving across to study digital art, the band was spilt across the UK but Richard carried on with the familiar acoustic set-up to perform his songs to new audiences. Feeling the growing frustration of being unable to play with the full band, and needing an outlet for new material, he began LUMO. Pedals appeared, the laptop got involved, loop pedals and vocal effects were used and vocal ranges were challenged. LUMO was about rediscovering the enjoyment of simply making sounds.
LUMO first performed at Be Nothing's inaugural show on 4th May 2011 supporting Kohwi at The Green Door Store. The ethic of experimenting live meant performing ideas fresh at every show.. songs came and went, they varied with analog instrument versus digital, laptop versus pedals and with the addition of synced visuals, something was finally taking shape. Feeding this new direction back to Heliopause was a difficult transition but their latest live shows have been well received. Electronic backing tracks and visuals create a new compelling soundscape but one which still retains Heliopause's defining qualities.
One year since the LUMO project began, a new label called Precious Metal will release The Lumo Tape. It will initially be a limited release with a run of 50 copies on cassette tape with digital download. The production differs from previous releases in that it has been mostly performed, recorded and mixed by Richard, making it a very self-contained work with layered soundscapes, electronic beats and a more pop feel. Recordings have taken place at home, at onedotzero studios in Belfast, and at an old CIA listening base in the forests of Berlin, using sometimes simply the iPhone to capture a track.
The Lumo Tape will be launched at a special show at Brighton Electric Studios on Saturday 5th May, with support from fellow Belfast musicians Before Machines and local indie/electronic act Krill.
